HASTINGS School & Teen Activity Programme - FAQ's

48. I am under 18, can I study at the London School?

No, our London school s for adults only. You should be 18 to apply. Sometimes we can admit a 17 year old if your parents sign a consent form and you are nearly 18.

49. So if I am under 18 what can I do?

During the summer, we run a Teen Activity programme for 14 to 17 year olds. This programme runs at our Hastings school.

50. What is the Teen Activity Programme?

http://www.shaneglobal.com/Courses/YouthCourses/TeenActivity/tabid/944/Default.aspx

The Teen Activity Programme includes General English lessons in the mornings, activities in the afternoons and some evenings, and excursions to places of interest at the weekend.

51. Is the Teen Activity a residential camp?

No, all students in Hastings, teenagers and adults, are placed with host families. We do not offer residence accommodation in Hastings.

52. I only eat Halal food. Will this be provided at my homestay?

No, Hastings is a small town with a very small Muslim population. If you have dietary requirements or allergies, we will always try our best to place you in an appropriate homestay but we cannot always comply with all requests. If you have special dietary needs, we recommend that you book well in advance or choose self catering homestay. Or, at very busy times, we may suggest  that you enrol a London school (adults only) where it is much easier to place with an appropriate family.

53. How far away from the school will my homestay be?

Families generally do not live within walking distance of the school. Our host families are situated on bus routes and the journey to school can take as long as 30 minutes. Please expect to spend time travelling to school!

54. Will I have internet access in my homestay?

This is not something our host families are required to provide. Sometimes they have internet access and sometimes they don’t. We cannot guarantee a homestay with internet. All students have free internet access at the school.

55. Can I start my course in the middle of the week?

NO. All students must start on a Monday. All homestays are organised weekend to weekend. Homestays cannot accept a student who arrives on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. If you arrive in the middle of the week, you cannot start your course until the next Monday and we cannot have accommodation available for you until the next weekend so you will have to stay in a hotel. We ask students to help us by not booking flights in the middle of the week, but in exceptional circumstances we will do what we can to help accommodate you.

56. Will there be pets in my homestay?

British people love animals. Most families have a pet or several pets and they ALL live in the house. This is part of British culture and students need to be aware of this.

57. Will there be children in my homestay?

We cannot guarantee this. Many families are one parent families with children. Many families are older parents whose children have left home. Generally, if you book self catering or breakfast only, you will be placed with a single person in a homestay, rather than a family.

58. Can I book a shared room in a homestay if I travel alone?

TAP students will often share a room. For adult students travelling alone, you cannot book a twin room as a cheaper option. You can only book a twin room if you are travelling and studying with a friend.

59. Will I be placed with a white family?

Britain is very multicultural. A very large number of British people are not white. For a homestay you will be placed with a British family. A British family can be from any background, any religion,  have any colour of skin, and cook many different types of food.  Many people work at weekends. Many people do not go to church. This is NORMAL in Britain and something that students need to be aware of.

Student Testimonials
Sung Wook Lee (South Korean)

level: intermediate
I definitely love this school. First of all, I have been meeting many teachers in Shane School. Each teacher is really good. When I don’t understand anything, all teachers explain to me in a friendly and kindly way. Every week, students can experience social programme, you can also meet many teachers and students there and in our school. There are various students from all over the world. It’s really special because you can experience various cultural differences. The school isn’t very big, we feel like in a family. Now you have to grab your special chance. It is absolutely amazing experience!!!
